Microlearning Project
I am a professional web designer and graphic designer so I know a lot of tools. For this week I decided that I didn’t want to make a chart that was a graphic because graphics by nature are not accessible. They are also not really user-friendly or mobile-responsive (scales for different devices). Creating a mobile responsive chart by hand requires a lot of work and I am all about making my life easier. So I searched for a WordPress Plugin that is free, easy to use, and customizable to create a Comparison of Learning Theories Chart.
Tool: WP Data Tables
Final Product: Comparison of Learning Theories Chart
Reflection: In order to find the tool I went to Google and Searched on Word Press Tables and Charts plugin. I came up with several websites including plugin websites and other websites that write about Word Press tools. This is an example of Connectivism because I used Google, a giant network of websites to find other professionals and subject matter experts to guide me with their experiences with several plugins. While I still had to install and evaluate the plugins myself to determine if the plugin would do what I needed them to do I had a starting point. Since I am a web professional, I was able to utilize my prior knowledge of tables and Word Press to determine which product would work best for my application. This would be an example of Andragogy.
Once I determined which plugin was the best I read the documentation on how to create and enhance my chart. The plugin company created a series of written documents as well as videos to demonstrate how to use the plugin.
To create my first chart, I was able to glance at the directions, determine it worked similarly to other products I used and got started. In order to enhance the chart, I needed to actually read the small section on alignment. The plugin used microlearning principles. Overall I believe the tech industry utilizes a lot of adult learning principles and structured in a way that they make the information readily available to those that want to learn.
